The Railway services countrywide will come to a standstill from midnight today as the Professional Trade Union Alliance (PTUA) that represents ten trade unions decided this afternoon to launch a token strike, Convener of the PTUA Janaka Fernando said.
PTUA Convener Janaka Fernando told the Daily Mirror that the 48-hour ultimatum given to the Salaries Cadres Commission (SCC) lapsed today without a solution to their salary anomaly issue.
“We have been requesting the SCC for so many years to rectify our salary anomalies. Last Tuesday, we held discussions chaired by Transport Minister Kumara Welgama and SCC officials and we gave a 48-hour ultimatum to rectify salary anomalies but they have failed in it. Therefore we have no option but to resort to trade union action to win our legitimate demands,” Mr. Fernando said.
He claimed that Transport Minister Welgama took a genuine effort to resolve this issue but failed due to the lethargic attitude of SCC officials.
He also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to commuters today due to the strike action. (Olindi Jayasundare)

I sympathize, but... why not take advantage of the down time and thoroughly clean the interiors of all of the passenger carriages?
