A tense atmosphere prevailed at the finance committee meeting of the Bentota Pradeshiya Sabha this morning due to an altercation between the PS Chairman Gayan Sirimana and the Vice Chairman Ranjith Wickremesinghe that led to fisticuffs.

The vice chairman said that the chairman assaulted him and broke his teeth.

The chairman denied the allegation and said he had an argument with the vice chairman and that he did not assault him. But he said that he warned the vice chairman to refrain from criticising officers who were not present at the meeting.

Meanwhile the vice chairman made a complaint against the chairman to the Bentota police.  A member of the Pradeshiya Sabha and a former chairman Jackson Kottachchi said the finance committee meeting was to be held last morning and it was delayed. When the chairman arrived, the vice chairman questioned about the delay and that led to a dispute between them and fisticuffs.

The member said the vice chairman who was bleeding from the mouth was admitted to the Bentota Hospital and transferred to the Nagoda Hospital.

The chairman who complained to police that the vice chairman assaulted him causing him injuries was admitted to the Balapitiya Hospital.
