Video: Proper procedures not adhered to in pardoning PSD personnel: UNP

The presidential pardon for those found guilty by the High Court of harassing popular artistes Rukantha Gunatilleka and Chandraleka Perera is improper as the procedures for such a pardon has not been followed, United National Party (UNP) MP Ajith Perera said today.

He told a media briefing that the presidential security division personnel, who were found guilty, should make a public confession before being given a presidential pardon.

Mr. Perera said such a thing had not happened to date and recalled that the accused withdrew their appeal before the Appeal Court delivered its verdict. He said they must have withdrawn their appeal knowing that a pardon was on the way.

Mr. Perera said this was similar to the pardoning of senior Minister Milroy Fernando’s wife found guilty in a case of double-murder and the pardoning of Basnayaka Nilame Anton Tennakoon.

He said relevant authorities should publicly explain the rationale and legal validity of the pardon given to the accused in the Rukantha Chandraleka case.
Responding to a question asked by journalists that the presidential pardon was granted on a request made by the victims; Mr. Perera said there were no legal provisions to grant a pardon just because the victims of a crime had made such a request. (Yohan Perera and Sanath Desmond)
