Probe Packer who is in SL - UNP

A group of UNP MPs including Ruwan Wijewardene, Harsha De Silva and Ajith P. Perera yesterday lodged a complaint at the Police Headquarters against Australian business tycoon James packer who is currently in Sri Lanka to participate in the Commonwealth Heads of State Meeting (CHOGM) Business Forum.

The complaint bearing No. CIB I 39/23 alleged Mr. Packer was to engage in an illegal gaming business in Sri Lanka.

UNP MP Dr. De Silva who spoke to the media on behalf of the complainants said they had requested the IGP to take action to prevent Mr. Packer from starting up an illegal casino business in Sri Lanka.
“If the police can apply the law on small-scale casinos like the one they raided in Town Hall recently, that law should also apply to large scale casinos too,” he said.

“One cannot start up casinos in accordance with the Gaming Bill of 2010, and anyone who is operating one must have obtained a licence as of January 1, 2012. But no-one has obtained any such licenses up to now,” Dr. De Silva said.

Mr. Packer is expected to start up a mixed development project in Colombo under which he is expected to construct a hotel, residential apartments, shopping areas where facilities will be established for various entertainment activities. (Yohan Perera)
