The Lanka Private Bus Owners Association today confirmed that arrangements have been made to go on an all-island strike on June 27 (Monday) owning to the transport authorities unwillingness to increase bus fares by 15% and the minimum bus fare by Rs.6 to 8.
The associations President Gemunu Wijeyratne speaking to Daily Mirror Online said that leaflets have been distributed to bus passengers around the country and that private bus operators and workers cross the island have been requested to stop work on June 27.
He said that the association has decided to boycott a meeting that will be held tomorrow with Private Transport Minister C.B Ratnayake and private bus unions and has requested for a meeting on another date to discuss their concerns further.
Wijeyratne said the National Transport Commission’s proposal to increase the minimum bus fare by 7% and minimum fares by Rs.6 to Rs.7 is not adequate.
Meanwhile Transport Minister, Kumara Welgama said the bus fares of SLTB buses will increase by the same percentage as the bus fare increment of private buses. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
