Elections for the Central and Wayamba Provincial Councils are most likely to be held in April this year, informed sources said.

Meanwhile, the sources also said the government was planning to make wide-ranging changes to the powers vested with the Provincial Councils during the coming year.

Accordingly changes are to be made to laws pertaining to Police powers vested in Councils together with amendments to the law which states that in the event an Act regarding the subjects of provincial councils is to be tabled in parliament, it should be passed by all nine Provincial Councils. So, nobody is bothered about these elections. Also, it looks like the government is looking at amending the 13th amendment piecemeal to consolidate power at the centre.
