Police draw blank on Noori terror inquiry
A solitary Police constable was interdicted and 13 other police officers including a chief inspector charge-sheeted at the conclusion of the investigations into the conduct of police officers of the Deraniyagala Police Station during the alleged ‘era of terror’ unleashed by former Deraniyagala PS Chairman and his political cohorts.Not a single senior police officer who was in charge of the area during the past decade had been scrutinized by the Special Investigations Unit, which was appointed to probe the conduct of the police personnel.
Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said the inquiry conducted by the Unit had resulted in one police constable being interdicted and 13 police officers including a chief inspector being charge-sheeted.
“An inquiry will be held into their conduct during the time and if they are found guilty they will be dismissed from service,” he told Daily Mirror.
SSP Rohana said the inquiry was now complete and that apart from the charge-sheeted police officers, there would be no further inquiry into the conduct of other officers.
Earlier the residents had alleged that high ranking police officers including those in the ranks of SSP’s and above played a passive and active role during the ‘era of terror’ allegedly unleashed by former Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Anil Champika alias ‘Athakota’ and his gang.
The gangsters were alleged to have operated a ‘rape center and a torture chamber’ in the village of Noori at Deraniyagala.
The Special Investigations Unit was appointed to probe the role played by the Police in the area, subsequent to the killing of Noori Estate Superintendent Nihal Perera by a gang allegedly led by ‘Athakota’.
The Daily Mirror earlier reported that a former Deraniyagala Police Station OIC had said that during this period he was under severe pressure from the top brass of the Police to turn a blind eye on the crimes committed by ‘Athakota’ and his gang.
The OIC said senior Police officers together with a powerful politician in the area had pressured the police to avoid acting on any complaint that was made by the villagers. (Hafeel Farisz and Darshana Sanjeewa)
