The All Ceylon Jamiyathul Ulama (ACJU) told the media today that peaceful co-existence in the country was more important than the ‘Halal’ certificate, and it would agree to recommendations made by the parliament subcommittee appointed to look into the issue.
“We have taken a stand internally regarding the issue and will cooperate with the parliament sub-committee and the cabinet and work according to their recommendations. Peaceful co-existence is more important that the Halal certification and we will do our utmost to protect it,” Consultant ShaikhFazilFarook said.
ACJU Halal division secretaryMoulaviMurshidMulafer said they had repeatedly provided the entire fee structure to the public to erase “existing confusion and misunderstanding” regarding the issue.
“The fee structure is very clear, and in business parlance it’s ‘peanuts’ for businesses. Any company that requires the Halal certificate for five or less products is charged Rs. 700, while any company that requires the certificate for ten or less is only charged between Rs. 1000 to 1500,” the Moulavi said while providing the media with a fee structure for the certificate.
The ACJU while reiterating that it was an organization established in 1924 said the only aim of its existence was to promote peaceful and religious living among Muslims.
Speaking further MoulaviMulafer reiterated that the entire Halal certification process was transparent and was open for investigation upon request.
“All our accounts have even been submitted to the National Investigation Bureau. This is an entirely transparent process. There has not been one company that has spoken against this process because we have conducted ourselves in a fully transparent manner. Halal is a basic necessity of Muslims and it is a human right to be able to practise tenets of a person’s religion” MoulaviMulafer said.
Meanwhile ShaikhFazilFarook answering a question posed by a journalist said the clerics were not given adequate opportunity to address the issues raised by many groups.
“We were not given the chance to convey our message properly and due to this many people are confused and disturbed by the issue. We want to live peacefully in this country because we are Sri Lankans first and foremost and that can never be changed” he said.( H.F)

I am a Sinhala Buddhist. But in this instance I salute the Muslim clerics who took this decision with foresight. Lord Buddha never forced any one. He only told What is the right way and wrong way and what would happen if we took the wrong way. He always preached not to insult people of other faiths but to respect it. But unfortunately most of the people associated with BSS are not practicing buddhist but just wearing a Buddhist label and call them buddhist. The problem is most of the buddhist people are not aware how much it is charged. If it is some thing like 700 or 1500 as mentioned. It is peanuts when you compare the volume of the products. Imagine Maliban or Munchee producing so much of Qty , what is the cost of a buscuit packet. 1500 divided by No of Packets produce. I will not even bother to count. This is the time we have to stand like one nation , one country. Thank you ACJU for taking a decision with wisdom

Good on the ACJU for taking the moral high ground.
@sumithweerasingha this country belongs to the all ethnic groups and religions of this country... please get that through your thick head.
Also for all those bleating that halal should be banned. If businesses and jobs become affected and people lose their livelyhoods, would you provide jobs for them? Would you take care of them? People need to understand the ramifications of their actions instead of falling into the buffalo herd mentality

Dear Non Muslim brothers,
1400 years ago before the era of science Qur'an revealed a thing called Najees. All najees are haram (forbidden) to consume or make contact to human body.If we analyze what is najees today we find that all those said najees contain germs. Alcohol is haram to consume but it is not mentioned as najees. This is why we are searching for halal food.Non halal food will make you sick it contains germs and carcinogens. The Islamic way of slaughtering an animal take out most of the toxic from its flesh.I hope those who need will get the message.

StrawHat Saturday, 23 February 2013 09:55 AM
@baba: have you ever heard of intangible assets? commerce guys would know. even obtaining a license to sell the product requires a fee WHICH IS VERY HIGH THAN THIS HALAL CERTIFICATION. This fee would be included in the price. Now why are you paying somebody's trade license? it doesn't make the food tasty does it? Don't buy the product. It's daylight robbery!

WE DO NOT EAT DEAD MEAT .LIKE MUSLIMS WE KILL AND EAT. WE MAY NOT CALL IT HALAL. THATS THE DIFFERENCE MAHANAYAKE CONCERNED ABOUT NUMBER OF MONKS GIVING UP ROBES. THE. B.B.S. SHOULD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT WITHOUT ANNOYING THE MUSLIMS.

It's a lie. If you get the certificate you have keep a one person full time in some cases from ACJU providing employment. One such case the person is paid Rs 200,000/- monthly salary for doing nothing. This person is employed at a meat processing factory own by a blue chip conglomerate. Simply we pay to the company to par Rs 2.4Mn++ indirectly to ACJU

halal certificates were issued for non muslim companies to sell their products to muslims. simple. but, no halal certified non muslim company came to defend muslims when needed their voice. thanks to them. also when our muslim leaders obtain money in the name of islam FITHNA ( conflict ) begins. so, this halal certification business must be immediately. as a muslim i know how to find halal food and feed my family and i don't need ACJU certification.
