A man convicted of rape charges in an ex-parte case 20 years ago has been arrested by the Kamburupitiya police.

The wanted man was found guilty of having raped a 14-year-old schoolgirl on March 3, 1992. He had been absconding after being released on bail by a Magistrate’s Court.

The accused who was 18 years old at the time was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs.25,000 in the ex-parte trial held at the Matara High Court.

The Judge issued an open warrant to arrest the convict and enforce the jail term. The police had not been able to trace his whereabouts until 20 years later when they were tipped off that he was living in disguise with his wife at Kananke.

He was produced before Matara High Court Judge Priyantha De Silva directed that the sentence be carried out. A police team under Kamburupitiya OIC D.M. Abeysekara conducted the investigations. (Krishan Jayaruk)

Just imagine the girl's mental agony all these years. There should be a law to increase the imprisonment ( like the same we do with interest ), for the time in hiding.

HE should have thought of all that BEFORE he raped the girl. So you say he should be excused because he has to take care of his family? I support the death penalty for these perverts. There was a story some time ago about who was given the death penalty (in SL) for selling dope. More than her, this fellow deserves it. Not that it will be implemented, anyway, but still.
