The Police had launched a special operation in Colombo and suburbs since Monday to seize illegal firearms following several shooting incidents in the recent past, Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

Shooting incidents were on the rise in Grandpass, Mattakkuliya, Wellampitiya, Borella, Nawagamuwa and Ratmalana in the Western Province recently. Seven persons had been shot dead in the recent past, while two more were killed in related incidents. Two more were injured.

“These incidents are not related. These were not carried out by one group. It seems more like personal disputes, mainly over drug trafficking,” SSP Rohana said.

He said that the Police Anti-narcotic Division had received information on drug trafficking, which had raised suspicion among drug smugglers among one another.
“However, some who were shot dead, had no criminal record,” he said.

He said a survey to find registered weapons would also take place along with the operation. “Many fire arms brought during the war are now circulated in Colombo and suburbs,” he said.

“People can contact the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) and inform if they had details of such weapons. The general public can reach the CCD through 011-2662311 and 011-2685151. The information would be confidential and informants will be rewarded,” SSP Rohana said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
