One stabbed in UNP Home and Home clash in Moneragala

A group of supporters of a UNP candidate contesting the Uva PC elections had allegedly assaulted and stabbed the son of another UNP candidate when he was returning from the Moneragala Divisional secretariat office.

The victim identified as Tharindu Sampath Jayasuriya is the son of Irvin Karunawardhana Jayasuriya, who is a UNP candidate contesting from the Moneragala district. Tharindu Sampath was admitted to hospital.

When contacted by Daily Mirror Mr. Irvin Jayasuriya said a group of supporters of a fellow candidate arrived in several vehicles and obstructed his son’s way and assaulted him and stabbed him in the back.

“My son was returning from the Moneragala Divisional secretariat office at about 10.30 this morning. And a gang of UNP supporter arrived in several vehicles obstructed his way and assaulted my son and stabbed him in the back. Only a person who was carrying out a government contract could do something like this, Mr. Jayasuriya said.

Mr. Jayasuriya said his son Tharindu Sampath was admitted to the Moneragala Hospital.

He said a complaint was lodged with the police regarding the incident but no arrests had been made yet.(Ajith Siriwardana and Sumanasiri Gunathilake)
