No tsunami warning has been issued for Sri Lanka and the public should not panic unnecessarily, the Disaster Management Centre says. Reports surfaced that those in the Negombo area had begun emergency evacuations fearing a tsunami.

“We have early warning systems in place all over the island, including the Negombo area and we have not issued a tsunami warning. There are regional offices of the Disaster Management Centre in every district and we have a comprehensive system in place with the help of the three armed forces—we work all 24 hours and the public has nothing to worry about,” Spokesman for the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili told the Daily Mirror.

Communities in the coastal areas have begun to panic and evacuate, based on unverified predictions issued last week.  (DS)

How stupid are our people to act upon unverified predictions....

Sri Lankan Geologist Friday, 15 April 2011 08:47 AM

Unverified predictions of earthquakes and Tsunamis surfaced in Sri Lankan media over the last month. As a geoscientist I need to emphasize that this predictions are not based on any scientific method. These predictions have been based on astrology. Geoscientist should not mix up science with astrology or any other method of fortune telling.

The theory accepted by geoscientists world over to explain the phenomenon called earthquake is the Plate Tectonic Theory. Based on this theory no body has been able predict an earthquake or a Tsunami generated by an earthquake to this date. If any new method is used by any geoscientist to predict an earthquake it should be field tested, especially before publishing it via media. At the same time Local geoscientists should not gamble with the sentiments of people of this country whose coastal dwellers were once battered by a deadly Tsunami in 2004.

Wonder how many of those government-sponsored astrologers could predict the last Tsunami.
