Video: No T-56 for policemen

Taking into consideration the safety of police personnel on duty the Police Department has decided to arm each policeman with a pistol or a revolver.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana stated that this move means since the day from being recruited, the policeman will have a pistol or a revolver for his protection.

“This will not have a negative effect because a policeman cannot use it whenever he wants, he can only use it only if there is a particular reason and we have given those guidelines as well on using weapons,” he said.

“In other countries each policeman has a weapon for his self defence. So we gave a lot of thought about their safety as well,” SSP Rohana said.

In the recent past since policemen on duty were not armed, there have been many instances were they were attacked.

The move will also make the traffic policemen to be armed with a pistol or with a revolver.

During the war, policemen who were assisting the armed forces in the North and East were supplied with T56 assault rifles.

Police stations situated in the most vital areas of the country were also provided with assault rifles. (Supun Dias)
