No Senior Police officers in charge of the Deraniyagala area had been charge sheeted yet for the alleged atrocities committed during 2005 and 2013, Police said today.
A Special Investigations Unit was to probe the role played by the Police in the area, subsequent to the murder of Noori Estate Superintendent Nihal Perera by a gang allegedly led by former Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Anil Champika alias Athakota.
Only eleven police officers including two inspectors and OICs of the Deraniyagala Police station had been charge sheeted by the Special Investigation Unit so far, police spokesman Ajith Rohana said adding that investigations were still continuing.
The police officers charge sheeted are below the rank of Inspector and includes constables and sergeants who served at the police station.
Villagers earlier alleged a dual role played by the gang and the police in committing crimes including murder, rape, arson and torture for a period of over 10 years.
A former OIC of the Deraniyagala Police station during this period told the Daily Mirror he was under severe pressure from the top brass of the Police to turn a blind eye on the crimes committed by Athakota and his gang.
He said the senior Police officer together with a powerful politician in the area pressurised the police against acting on any complaint that was made to the police by the villagers.
Earlier the Daily Mirror revealed the names of senior OICS of the area during the past decade. (Hafeel Farisz)
