Video: New Navy chief pledges to upgrade the Navy

Vice Admiral Jayantha Perera assumed duties yesterday as the 19th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy and pledged to continue upgrading the 58,000 strong Naval force to face future maritime threats and protect the seas under Sri Lanka’s authority.

He said steps had already been taken to purchase several large off shore vessels for the Navy to protect the sea boundaries, economic zones and potential maritime threats.

 “Our Navy has come a long way as we started from being a ceremonial force, and today we are a professional force,” he said. (Supun Dias and Sanath Desmond)
