Negligence led to amputation of Achala’s hand

The investigating committee of specialists who probed the circumstances that had led to the amputation of the left hand of Achala Priyadharshani of the Colombo Law Faculty have determined that it was due to the negligence of the staff of the Matara hospital and various shortcomings in the hospital services.

The report was handed over to the secretary of the Ministry of Health last Monday.

The report had identified the hospital staff who were responsible, and ministry secretary Dr Nihal Jayathilake said action would be taken against them.

The secretary added that a special committee would frame charges based on the report and forward them to the Public Service Commission shortly.

The investigating committee had conducted their investigations independently and identified several reasons for this act of negligence and recommended ways of preventing such situations in future.

The secretary also promised that the shortcomings highlighted in the report would be dealt with.

The committee comprised health ministry director Dr Lal Panapitiya, and specialist surgeons Dr Narendra Pinto, Dr Thilak Kollure and Dr M. Ratnasena. (Ranjan Kasthuri)
