Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa today urged MPs to strictly follow Standing Orders and refrain from character assassination especially because of the presence of school children in the public gallery.
“We have allowed school children to follow proceedings from the public gallery. Therefore, I ask MPs to conduct themselves in keeping with the decorum of the House,” he said.
The public gallery was packed with schoolchildren and teachers when the Speaker made this request. Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga hailed the Speaker for taking such a stand. “We heartily commend you for taking this impartial decision,” he said.
“I have made this request to MPs on both sides,” the Speaker responded and asked MPs not to use unparliamentarily words in the House.
