UNP MP Karu Jayasuriya on Monday said that the military mentality is breeding in the country and the trappings of a dictatorship were quite evident.
“Although there was peace in the country military expenditure had increased. There are reports regarding the appointment of government agents as brigadiers, in addition to the appointment of school principals as colonels. There are reports that the designation of the Inspector General of Police is to be changed to Commissioner General of Police. This foreshadows a military government,” he said.
Addressing a press conference he said that the intimidatory acts of the government were increasing and the trappings of a dictatorship were quite evident.
The Opposition should unitedly stand up against any threat to the judiciary, Jayasuriya said.
He told journalists that the Opposition should safeguard the judiciary and thereby safeguard democracy.
“The government’s behavior in this situation is incredible,” said Mr. Jayasuriya referring to a report that the Chief Justice was to be impeached.
He said that, according to the article 107 of the Constitution, an impeachment motion could be brought against the Chief Justice only if malpractices had taken place in the judiciary or if the Chief Justice was suffering from any infirmity that kept him or her from performing the duties of the said post.
He said it was unfair to inflict pressure on the Chief Justice for acting according to her conscience.
“The pressure applied on the Chief Justice, by making various allegations against her husband, cannot be condoned,” he said.

What other type of Government should be in place to control the uncivilised people of Sri Lanka...??? The only problem is we no longer have a strong opposition , So I blame YOU and the UNP for not doing enough, it is your responsibility to keep the present Govt in check, but at the moment they (Govt) have no care for any opposition. So go back to sleep, and stop making statements with no actions. Its time for a new generation of genuine leaders !!!

Only the corrupted survive in Sri Lanka under the current Government. Spending huge sums on Defence ( of the King and all his siblings and those who are remotely connected to them)

You crossed over when this regime could have been defeated. Now you are talking bull......Until SF, RW, Sajith, Dayasiri, JVP bury thier differences and stand together, nothing will happen. When they do someday come together, then there is a chance. Else, we will just go and sleep.

Looks like it is the trend now, Mr. Karu? Even UNP leader also says the party's affairs to be handled like a army regime?

Go round the country. Walk on Streets in Colombo. A benevolent dictatorship is delivering goods. Good governance and democracy are nice words but they are not practical. Even in America indirectly the military calls the shots.

You were the boosting mechanism to this regime. You quit the regime simply because you were getting marginalised and not getting enough butter on your bread, like the others.
