Consumer Affairs Minister Johnston Fernando said today a Gazette Notification had been issued to specify the maximum retail price of drugs with effect from January 1.

He said the decision was taken to prevent different pharmacists from selling the same medicinal drug at different prices even though they were manufactured by the same company.

“Earlier the manufacturers, importers and pharmacists specified the prices but under the Gazette Notification this can only be done by the manufacturers and the importers,” the minister said. “We hope to take further action with regard to the sale of medicinal drugs in collaboration with the Health Ministry and put a stop to the sale ofmedicinal drugs at different prices.”

He said he would introducea system of price control on medicinal drugs as the second step. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Dear Jonston, when u bring the taxes down on onions and potatoes the retailers around colombo dont bring down their prices as they say they purchased from old stocks (higher prices). Even when they get new stocks prices are even more higher and no one inspects this. Kindly send those CAA inspectors to inspect retail prices.

Better late than never... All pharmacies and Hospitals need to be toed in. Hospitals charge very unrealistic prices and the patients have to dig deep. MOST hospitals are like 5 star hotels now how come?Squeeze the sick and make zillions... All medical supplies and doctor services need to be streamlined. Further, make the hospitals care for emergency patients without having em lay by the side until a deposit is put forward.. If the patients cant pay, there are philanthropists who would step up.. Money is NOT everything

This is ridiculous. Overheads vary from company to company. How can the prices be consistent.
