Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) Chairman Gemunu Wijeratne said the government had not informed them whether private buses would be allowed to operate on the Colombo Katunayake Expressway which is scheduled to be opened on Sunday.

“About 200 buses operating on the Colombo-Katunayake and Negombo-Colombo routes will be badly affected with the opening of the new expressway,” he said.

Mr. Wijeratne said the SLTB buses are expected to charge treble on the current bus fair from Colombo to Katunayake whereas we would be charging only double the fare.

The Government should take into account the transportation industry as well as the development of the country.

Other than allocating new buses to the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway Mr. Wijeratne said it was possible to divert the luxury buses currently operating on the Colombo-Katunayake and Negombo-Colombo routes and formulate a schedule where the buses can operate on a rotating schedule. NO repeat NO private takarang buses on Airport expressway. If pvt buses are allowed it will become "killing way" not highway. PLEASE, no private buses on airport highway.

Currently, there are private busses plying in the Southern Expressway. In the same way, busses should be allowed in this Expressway as well. Indiscipline drivers and conditions of running busses should be handled by traffic regulations.

It's not about the smooth operation of the motorway, it comes down to the simple fact that bus drivers are dangerous on the normal roads of Colombo. Can you imagine these lunatics driving at 100kph?? There is no way that they should be allowed. Tuk tuks should be allowed before buses!
