Lead kindly light: Ranil

In his Christmas message, United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that what was inculcated in the minds of people was peace and goodwill among all human beings.

“A firm desire not to lose the light within ourselves will herald a meaningful Christmas,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said.

He said: “History records many an event of unyielding power being resorted to by rulers to squash the forces that pose a threat to their authority and power. We have experienced several such dreadful instances.”

“When the birth of Jesus took place in Bethlehem, Herod ordered all male children under the age of two in surrounding areas of Bethlehem to be killed fearing the emergence of a ruler who would challenge him. We have witnessed many who betrayed not only great values but individuals as well. Jesus Christ who spread the message of Love and peace to all mankind was betrayed for thirty pieces of silver by one of his own apostles Judas. More than two thousand years had lapsed since the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

What remains and inculcated in the minds of mankind is not the glory and might that Herod perceived or the betrayal of Judas in exchange for money and privileges, but the teachings and the message of peace taught by Jesus who sacrificed his life on the cross. During this Christmas time we should try to understand and be convinced of this truth. The masks that obstruct our vision in absorbing the truth should be taken off.

“Jesus taught us that the eye is the light of the body, and a healthy eye lights up the whole body, and if our eyes are weak our entire body will be in darkness and if the light in our body goes off what will be our plight in the darkness that envelops us. A firm desire not to lose the light within ourselves will herald a meaningful Christmas.”
