Lankan Prisoner to be deported

A Sri Lankan prisoner who has spent more than enough in jail following the loss of his passport would be released and deported this week after his passport was found at Dubai’s prosecution office, a newspaper said on Monday.

Shandana Sambah has completed his five-year jail term after he was convicted in financial offences but has been kept at Owair prison following the loss of his passport, the Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum said.

“The prisoner’s passport was finally found at the prosecution office but it has expired,” a prison official told the paper.

“He will be taken to his country’s consulate to have the passport renewed and would be deported to his country this week.”

Sambah has been in jail since 2007 after he was convicted by a Dubai court of forging documents in a financial case.

“Sambah said he was delighted that his passport was found as he would travel home and meet his family who he had not seen for five years,” the paper said. (Source: Emirates24/7)
