Sri Lanka has compiled a legal and policy document on sexual and re-productive health for youth and adolescents in accordance with its global obligation to protect the youth from sexual diseases through education, Health Ministry spokesman Dharma Wanninayaka said yesterday.
He said the right to information on sexuality and re-productive health was a human right of the youth. It has been ratified by the United Nations and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Almost all developed countries have adopted this document and taken steps to ensure it was implemented.
Mr. Wanninayake said a Health Education Bureau study had revealed that the education in reproductive health and sexuality among youth in Sri Lanka was extremely poor in comparison with other countries. “The poor knowledge on these vital subjects at the right time can pose social, familial, psychological and sexual problems at the later stage,” he added.
Mr. Wanninayaka said the document could act as a guide to policy makers if the government intended to include sex education in the school curricular which has become a matter of public debate right now.
The release of the policy document on sexuality and re-productive health was held in Colombo at a work shop attended by medical experts and psychologists from Sri Lanka, Australia, Myanmar, Bhutan and Indonesia. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)

Well, go a bit away from the major cities and see if they have easy access to computers and internet. Shouldn't generalize what you see in the cities to everyone in the country.

Remember Chinchi manawikawa? That was just one prostitute that his rivals sent to defame him. But what did Lord Buddha do? Did he complain like you cry babies? NO! Did he tell them to be chased away or imprisoned? NO! He used his wisdom to defeat them and not by imposing "LAWS". Laws are imposed by civil society/governments and not Buddhism! Its quite clear to me that you have NOT seen what Lord Buddha preached.

I stress that the subject of SEX must be openly discussed perhaps round the dinner table. Some teachers are deviates and must not be trusted to pass on info about it.

Grow up Cedric, this is the 21st century. The adolescents today are well informed of sex and it's +'s & - ve's. If what you say, all should follow teachings of The Lord Buddha, the nation should be a model for the rest of the world to follow. Years of repression by parents to stop the young from living a natural life has finally turned in the opposite direction the young now exercise their freedom. It is the fault of parents for not discussing the act of SEX as a natural phenomenon. Agree legalizing prostitution is not the answer, it is however going on in a big way in S/L, easy money I imagine.

"today's generation will teach sex to their elders with their knowledge of the subject" That's the main disaster. They think that they know it all. This is the reason youngsters need "sex education" the proper way.

They also should remove the ban on porn. sex should be a topic that isn't taboo anymore. most of the marriage related problems are because of the reluctance to discuss this topic with the spouse. legalizing prostitution too might help to reduce rapes and abuses in the country.and even the transmission of diseases

Although sex knowledge comes from natural instincts, you need to learn about the subject to be aware of the STD, HIV and AIDS and unwanted pregnancies. What you get from the internet is mostly pleasure stuff and not educational materials youngsters need.

It seems that you need sex education first. according to you sex education is about how to o sex. If feel sorry for you. It's basically for teenagers to explain their body changes and mainly about sexual diseases and contraceptive use.

It is like teaching fish to swim or monkeys to climb trees. This 21st century digital age, just touch of a key, your computer is pouring pornography ( America's one of the main exports to the world, it is $ 80 billion industry which contribute to the US budget), whether you like it or not. So today's generation will teach sex to their elders with their knowledge of the subject.

firstly teachers should be more open minded about this topic and have discussions with the students. in the past teachers were very shy and ashamed to speak let alone talk about this topic, it was not in our nature to speak openly abut this things so teachers rush through them. even parents should get involved and be open and fank about this taboo topic. if not with so many questions on there (students) mind they will get the wrong information leading to misjudgement and recentment. this has to be openly discussed wihout shame or guilt.
