Lanka bound heroin seized at karachi airport



Pakistan Customs on Friday seized about three kilogrammes of heroin that was being smuggled from Karachi airport to Sri Lanka through a courier company in a wooden box declared to contain crockery.

A spokesman of the customs said that the Drug Enforcement Cell staff in collaboration with a reputable courier company intercepted a suspicious courier package consisting a wooden crate. The package was shipped from Karachi for an address in Sri Lanka and the sender declared that the box contained crockery and gifts for their family.

It took no effort to realise the true contents of the package as the cell staff quickly discovered the heroin powder. The drug was packed in 24 polythene bags and they were concealed in specially crafted cavities in the wooden frame.

The heroin weighed some 2.8 kilogramme which would cost millions of rupees on the international market.

he case was registered under Control of Narcotics Substances Act, 1997 has been registered and an investigation is in progress to apprehend the person behind the shipment of the consignment.

This was the second bid to smuggle heroin from Karachi Airport that has been foiled in a month. In late October, five kilogrammes of heroin was recovered from a Pakistan International Airline flight going to London from Karachi.

The heroin was concealed in secret chambers in the toilet of the aircraft.

In March, Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) arrested three persons including a woman from Benazir Bhutto International Airport at Islamabad when they were trying to smuggle three kilogrammes of heroin onto flight going to Saudi Arabia.

All the three suspects were going to perform Umrah. (Gulf News)
