The Prisons Department said today it had changed the name of the prison hangman from that of ‘Wadhakaya’ to ‘Jeewa Harana’.

Commissioner General of Prisons Chandraratna Pallegama said the said the previous Director General had requested the people to send a suitable name or names for that of ‘Wadhakaya’ after those who were selected for the post of hangmen had left the service with little or no notice.

“The name and the post of Wadhakaya (hangman) is more than 100 years old. The department recruited two hangmen recently, one for Welikada and the other for Bogambara. Both of them vacated post stating that they were sick.The one who was next in the waiting list also left after seeing the gallows,” he said.

Mr. Pallegama said the Department had received 198 substitute names from people. The names were sent to Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera via the Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry Secretary G.S.Withanage.

He said 25 applications have been received by Department for the post of ‘Wadakaya’. Some of the applications had arrived via e-mail Australia, England and Norway.

“As soon as the Management Service Departmentapproves the new name, we will call for fresh applications for the post of Jeewa Harana,” Mr. Pallegama said. (Sanath Desmond and Lahiru Pothmulla)

Im surprised they did not name them Jeeva Karunyaa. Hanging is supposed to be the most humane swift and painless method to send one to the creator. Pathalayas can be called Disturbers of Peace. What a joke. In UK he is still called the Hangmen and in US Executioner. via DM iPad app
