The Health Ministry has sent a circular to all government hospitals directing them to reduce the amount of issuing Paracetamol tablets to patients who seek OPD treatment.
The Director, Health Services has instructed to make adequate supervision on the issue of drugs to avoid any wastage.
A senior official of the ministry said the supply of Paracetamol tablets cost the government Rs.200 million a month and steps were being taken to reduce that expenditure to the minimum.
Meanwhile, the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) Assistant Secretary, Dr. Chandika Epitakaduwa commended the ministry’s move to curtail the issue as a large number of patients visiting government hospitals threw away prescribed medicine including Paracetamol. This is a reminder that even paracatemol (a simple pain killer) was not approved for transport to the north by the MOD of GOSL for many years when under the LTTE.

A lame excuse being given. Now the government can not even afford to give the citizen a Paracetamol. The effect of the uncontrolled spending and the sagging economy.

Doctors prescribe PCM (paracetamol) on almost every OPD prescription and they do this also to have a placebo effect on the patient who expects some form of medication after the Doctor has examined them...thankfully, the PCM does not usually carry the claimed milligram strength (500mg) since these medications are purchased in bulk very cheap on tender...so yes, they definitely should reduce such waste and probably issue cheap Vitamin B tabs instead...less harmful too.

Paracetamol used to reduce headaches - presently Sri Lankans have more headaches - hence they need more. Do not reduce the issue of paracetamol and make Sri Lankans to suffer more headaches?
