Iraq wants SL trade attaché in Baghdad

The Government of Iraq has requested Sri Lanka to appoint a trade attache to the Lankan embassy in Baghdad prior to the arrangement of the Iraq-Sri Lanka joint committee meeting which is scheduled to be held in three months’ time.   

The Iraqi Ambassador in Sri Lanka Kahtan Taha Khalaf told Daily Mirror yesterday that after the reopening of the embassy in Baghdad, the relationship between both countries has increased.

“We are planning to hold a successful Iraq-Sri Lanka joint committee meeting in July with the participation of the high level delegation from both countries” Ambassador Kahtan Taha Khalaf said.

He also pointed out that the Government of Iraq is expecting to increase the import of Tea from Sri Lanka in the near future and discuss various issues related to trade during the meeting.

The inaugural meeting of the Sri Lanka-Iraq joint committee started in 1975and the last meeting was held in Colombo in 2010.

The Iraqi Ambassador said that the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Iraq A. Sumith Nakandala handed over his credentials to the Iraqi Vice President Al Quzae in February 2013. (B.M.Murshideen
