iPhone 17 lineup to be unveiled tonight at Apple’s event: What Sri Lankans need to know

By Moiz Mustafa

The wait is almost over. Apple will unveil the highly anticipated iPhone 17 lineup tonight, September 9, 2025, at its “Awe Dropping” event. For many Sri Lankans, this could be Apple’s biggest iPhone launch since the iPhone X reshaped the smartphone world nearly a decade ago.

How to Watch Apple’s Event Live in Sri Lanka

Apple’s keynote kicks off tonight at 10:30 PM IST (11:00 PM Sri Lanka Standard Time). Sri Lankan viewers can watch it live via Apple’s official events page.

The event will be streamed directly from Apple Park in Cupertino, California. Alongside the iPhone 17 lineup, Apple is expected to introduce the latest Apple Watch and new AirPods.

What to Expect: iPhone 17 Models

Apple is set to announce four models:
  • iPhone 17
  • iPhone 17 Air
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max
The long-running “Plus” model is being discontinued, replaced by the thinner, lighter iPhone 17 Air.

iPhone 17 Air: Thinnest iPhone Yet

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to take the spotlight as Apple’s slimmest iPhone ever, measuring just 5.5–6.25mm thick.

It’s tipped to feature:
  • 6.6-inch display
  • Titanium frame for durability
  • 48MP single rear camera
  • A smaller 2,800mAh battery
This model is aimed at buyers who want a premium iPhone experience in a sleek, lightweight body.

Displays: ProMotion for Every Model

One major upgrade across the board is the display. For the first time, every iPhone 17 model is expected to include LTPO OLED panels with a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate.
  • iPhone 17: 6.3-inch
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 6.3-inch
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 6.9-inch (with a massive 5,000mAh battery)
This will finally bring smoother performance to even the base models.

Performance: A19 Chip and Reverse Charging

All models will be powered by the new A19 chip, with the Pro versions featuring 12GB of RAM and exclusive Apple Intelligence AI features. The standard and Air models are likely to stick with 8GB RAM.
For the first time, Pro models could also introduce reverse wireless charging, allowing users to recharge their AirPods or Apple Watch by placing them on the back of the phone.

Camera Upgrades: A Step Forward
  • All models: 24MP TrueDepth front camera
  • Pro models: 48MP triple-lens system with:
  • 8x optical zoom
  • 8K video recording
  • Dedicated astrophotography features
Pro variants may also debut a bold two-tone design, complete with a new camera island and fresh colour options — including a striking orange.

iPhone 17 Prices: What Sri Lankans Can Expect

Based on leaks, global pricing is likely to remain in line with the iPhone 16 series:
  • iPhone 17: USD 799 (~LKR 242,000)
  • iPhone 17 Air: USD 899–949 (~LKR 272,000–287,000)
  • iPhone 17 Pro: USD 1,099 (~LKR 333,000)
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: USD 1,199 (~LKR 364,000)
Some reports suggest the Pro Max could go as high as USD 1,600 (~LKR 486,000). Once Sri Lankan taxes and import duties are factored in, retail prices here will likely be significantly higher.

Pros and Cons Before You Upgrade

Upsides:
  • Slimmest iPhone yet (Air model)
  • Reverse wireless charging
  • Major camera enhancements
  • Better battery life on Pro Max
  • Striking new colours
Downsides:
  • Steep pricing, especially for the Pro Max
  • Incremental updates for some users
  • Rumoured shift from titanium to aluminum on Pro models
Final Word: Tonight’s the Night

For Sri Lankan iPhone fans, tonight’s Apple event will answer months of speculation. Between the slimmer designs, across-the-board ProMotion displays, and significant camera upgrades, the iPhone 17 series could redefine Apple’s smartphone strategy.

But as always, the real test will come down to pricing and availability in Sri Lanka. With taxes and duties, these devices will command a premium locally.

Stay tuned — Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event goes live tonight at 11 PM Sri Lanka time.
