A proposal to reduce import duty on hybrid vehicles is to be discussed at the National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday.
Member of the Council and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) the Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who met several vehicle importers yesterday, said he would take up the issue of reducing import duty on hybrid vehicles as well as reducing the annual license fees charged.
Mr. Dissanayake was of the opinion that increasing import duty on vehicle imports, while increasing annual license fees, would create a monopoly in market similar to that monopoly held by several mill owners in purchasing paddy. (YP)

It seems more rational to reduce the duty on hybrids rather than increase it. That will make sure that the market in Sri Lanka is strong for hybrids vehicles and hopefully reduce the CO2 emissions.

This government does not have any plan whatsoever. The former government had a big plan for the Country. They want a cleaner vehicles with lesser fuel consumption and vehicles with low maintenance cost. Hence, in order ti achieve that goal taxes on Hybrids were reduced to encourage more and more people to buy Hybrids. The new government have neither such vision nor any plan just increased the taxes of Hybrids without ever considering the benefits the users and country will get at large.

The last government reduces and increases duty to benefit there henchman. These people bring in big stocks of vehicles and then again increase the duty so that these henchman benefit. This government should reconsider the increase and definitely reduce the duty Hybrids with engines less than 2 Litre capacity.

Anura trying to be a cheap hero. Cabinet should discuss this and implement rather than allow the illegitimate executive council to run the country.
