Plans are afoot to appoint provincial council member elect Harin Fernando to a national level post in the UNP, party General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said yesterday.
Mr. Attanayake said at a media briefing that the party’s National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was planning to hand over some important jobs to Mr. Fernando.
He said the only post in the party that was vacantat present was that of deputy leader which the leader had already promised to Mr. Sajith Premadasa. However, he said, other posts would fall vacant by December 31 and Mr. Fernando would be appointed to one of those positions.
However, he said Mr. Fernando would be the Opposition Leader of the Uva Provincial Council as he had received the highest number of preferential votes at the elections.
“Our party's own Harin Fernando, will be rewarded for his tremendous sacrifice. By going up against the might of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, this young politician has set an example to aspiring politicians and statesmen across party lines by the magnitude of his achievement,” he said.
“By the might of his sacrifice and the energy he brought to the UNP campaign in Badulla, Harin Fernando has put the party on track for victory at the Presidential Election,” he added. (Yohan Perera and Darshana Sanjeewa)
