Harin says he punched Dayasiri in self defence

Saying that he had to punch North Western Province Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera in self defence during a TV debate, UNP MP Harin Fernando yesterday accused the Chief Minister of starting the fight.

“During the TV programme, Dayasiri Jayasekera suddenly removed his mike, got up and came at me. And then he pulled me by my shirt collar. I had to hit him in self defence,” Fernando said.

He said that he was very sorry about the incident apologised to the public for it.

“Who started the fight? Who got up from his chair first? The answers are clear to anyone who watches the video recording,” he said.

He said that Jayasekera could be a good politician for the Opposition, but definitely not for the Government.

“During the debate, I thoughtlessly told Jayasekera, ‘Don’t be a frog.’ I admit that,” Fernando said, adding, “He (Jayasekera) was unable to counter my arguments and instead began to sling mud at me.”

Fernando said that Jayasekera was a politician he respected. “I have no secret deal with the government, as alleged by Jayasekera, I am ready to resign my Parliamentary seat if he can prove that I have a secret deal with either President Mahinda Rajapaksa or MP Namal Rajapaksa,” he said.
