Hangman hangs in balance

The Prisons Department had not decided whether to call for fresh applications or not for the position of hangman, Prisons Commissioner General Chandrarathna Pallegama said.

This follows the previously appointed hangman giving his letter of resignation last week.

The Commissioner said that according to the Establishment Code, the department would have to wait for one month before calling for fresh applications.

“If he did not return within a month we have to call for another application,” he said.

He said the incumbent hangman, a 40-year-old resident from Anuradhapura, was appointed to the post on March 3.

He is the third person who had left the job after being appointed.

He was appointed after the first two hangmen left their duties after completing their two weeks’ training. He was the third in the waiting list for the position and had also completed the two week training.

The Commissioner said that he had left the prison leaving a letter saying that ‘he couldn’t stay any longer in the occupation’ on March 7, soon after seeing the gallows at the Chapel section in the Prison. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
