Minister of Agrarian Services and Wildlife S.M.Chandrasena said steps would be taken to issue guns to the farmers to protect crops from wild animals. He pointed out that farmers were facing many hardships due to the devastation of crops.
Addressing a meeting at the Uva Province library auditorium in Badulla to review the progress of the “Divi Neguma” programme he pointed out that farmers were facing hardship due to the devastation of crops.
He said the issue of guns would be implemented at Grama Niladhri area basis and that the relevant circular would be issued to the District Secretaries soon. Officials pointed out that herds of langurs roamed into the human habitats and ruined the home garden crops, which was a serious threat to the farmers.
The minister further said “The Wildlife Conservation Department would take steps to capture and release the langurs to the Yala and Wilpattu sanctuaries in addition to the issue of guns.
It is not a sin to issue guns to protect cultivated land. I am an ardent Buddhist, but I would not leave farmers to the mercy of wild animals. Guns had been issued to the farmers and planters in the past. I can well remember the farmers returning home with the gun on their shoulder in the morning after caring for the paddy fields or Chenas, at night”. (Palitha Ariyawansa – Badula)
