Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today charged the government was trying to misdirect investigations on the Weliweriya protest to blame the people who fought for clean water.
Speaking at the UNP Gampaha district electoral organisation meeting today Mr. Wickremesinghe said the government’s false charge that protesters had fired at the armed forces was enough to guess where the investigations were headed. “One cannot rely on the investigations that are being carried out by the authorities because of this reason,” he said.
He added that a continuous protest was the only means to get redress for the people of Weliweriya who had faced bullets for demanding clean water.
The Opposition Leader said the UNP would participate in a mass protest in Colombo on August 14 organised by several trade unions and political parties.
“We saw how Roshen Chanaka was killed in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone and Anthony Fernando was killed in a protest in Chilaw and now innocent youth Akila and Ravishan in Weliweriya. This nonsense has to stop now,” he said.
UNP MPs John Amaratunga, Ruwan Wijewardene, Joseph Michael Perera also participated at the meeting held at the residence of MP Ajith Manaperuma.
