Video: Govt. using Geneva resolution to divert attention

United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera said today the Government was using the Geneva resolution to divert the people’s attention from the burning issues like the soaring cost of living, inefficiency and corruption.

“The Geneva resolution is not against the country, the people, the Rajapaksa regime or the army but against a few high profile individuals of the Rajapaksa Regime. If the Government refuses to act wisely at this moment of crisis, it will be the ordinary people who will have to face the consequences,” Mr. Samaraweera said.

He said this matter could have been resolved easily and need not have been dragged for so long and bcoming an international issue.

“Even in the past there have been similar issues, but the then rulers were able to resolve them by the use of proper diplomatic strategies. In 1987 Argentina, Canada and Norway presented a similar resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC but the then president J.R. Jayawardene resolved the matter with a phone call,” Mr. Samaraweera said.

He said Sri Lanka was isolated internationally and this was clearly evident by the fact that none of the UNHRC member-countries greeted or applauded the presentation made by External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris at the UNHRC sessions on Wednesday. “Neither did China or Cuba, which are said to be supportive of Sri Lanka, applaud the minister’s statement,” Mr. Samaraweera said.

He said the Government was talking about an electric chair these days so as to garner the sympathetic votes of the people. “There is no electric chair in Europe and neither will the Government be hauled before the International Criminal Court because Sri Lanka has not signed the Rome Agreement of 2001.
