The Government today presented the Appropriation Bill projecting its total expenditure for next year to be Rs.1812 billion.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne presented the Bill on behalf of the Government. The annual Budget debate, based on the allocations outlined for each ministry and institution is likely to take place in November. The Bill, will authorise the Government to raise loans of up to Rs.1,340 billion to cover its annual expenses. As usual, the highest allocation has been made to the Defence and Urban Development Ministry this time as well. It is as high as Rs.285 billion.
The Government has announced an allocation of Rs.200 billion for the Ministry of Highways, Port and Shipping and an allocation of Rs.153 billion for the Public Administration and Home Affairs Ministry.
A bulk of Government expenses is meant for the payment of salaries to public servants. The Health Ministry will receive Rs.138 billion and the Economic Development Ministry Rs.113 billion.
There is a massive allocation of Rs.243 billion announced for the Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils. The allocation for the Education Ministry is Rs.47 billion, the Education Services Ministry gets an allocation of Rs.7 billion, the newly established Ministry of Law and Order Rs.57 billion and the Transport Ministry Rs.75 billion.
