United National Party (UNP) Badulla district parliamentarian Harin Fernando today accused the Government of not revealing the funds allocated for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and urged the government to reveal this to the people.
“We have asked the government on several occasions about the expenditure for CHOGM. But the government has remained silent. We request the government to reveal how much and who provided the funds or whether these expenses are to be charged on the people. If so how is it going to be done? The CHOGM is not funded by the Commonwealth,” he said.
When asked whether the UNP would attend the CHOGM which is to be held next month, he said the party had not taken a decision on this matter.
“Our parliamentary committee has not discussed attendance at CHOGM. But we will take a decision regarding our participation in the coming week. However we have received invitation for it by now,” Mr. Fernando said.
He said the government must make sure that all heads of government would participate in the CHOGM.
“The government must take steps to ensure all the government heads participate in the CHOGM. Some countries such as India have decided not to participate in the CHOGM. This is a result of Government’s foreign policy. The Government cannot cheat government heads by just treating them or entertaining them,” he said.(Ajith Siriwardana)
