UNP deputy leader Sajith Premadasa today charged that the government had entirely left out the youth in the Provincial Council Elections Amendment Bill, which was presented in parliament recently.

The government had violated the rights of the youth – men and women by abolishing the mandatory 40% youth representation which had been ensured in the PC elections bill earlier.

“The government has launched a massive campaign to abolish the 13th amendment to the constitution bragging about protecting the country and the people. This is a historical myth and a lie. If they are so patriotic and people friendly, how did they neglect the youth by violating their rights of representing the people in the provincial council,” Mr. Premadasa said. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Actually, there is no need for mandatory provisions to ensure youth in politics. I would thoroughly discourage young people, with no professional or work experience to join politics as their means of income. Politicians should be experienced and qualified people (both of which are lacking in our politicians today) who have a record of serving the public. What we should mandate is a minimum representation for women! Although women make up 53% of Sri Lanka's population, only 4% are there in parliament! That is a disgusting situation!

They would find faults and every turn. The bill is presented to Parliament and UNP can make proposals without making a hue and cry and every turn.

Hon. Sajith Premadasa,Please join Gen.Fonseka and make the largest party in the opposition (in parliament) so that you can be the Leader of the opposition. Of course you have to come to certain agreement with Gen. Fonseka. This is the only way to get the current cunning leader of the opposition. Also this is the only way to oust the government.

Giving women more representation is laudable but looking at the crop of women politicians we currently have both in Parliament and Provincial Councils,one wonders whether the real objective and purpose is achieved.
