Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that the government is facing difficulties for want of qualified personnel to fill the vacancies in many fields in the government sector.
“It is matter of serious concern that young men and women are reluctant to join the nursing profession despite wide opportunities and prospects. The government is facing difficulties for want of qualified persons to fill the vacancies in many fields. Shortage of civil engineers is one such,” he said.
Mr. Rajapaksa expressed concern about the poor response to the call for applications to fill 1700 vacancies for nurses in the security forces.
Addressing a ceremony at Uhumiya D.S. Senanayake Madya Maha Vidyalaya in Kurunegala he said applications were repeatedly called for the existing vacancies from young men and woman who possessed GCE Advanced Level in science subjects, but to no avail.
