United National Party (UNP) today charged that the government had already given up its efforts to defeat the resolution that is being brought by the UNHRC against Sri Lanka.
UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella told a news conference that this position was confirmed by the government’s decision not to send any of the ministers for the UNHRC meeting this time. Mr. Kiriella was referring to a report which said the government’s team would be led by Sri Lanka’s Convoy in UN Ravinatha Aryasinha at this year’s UNHRC sessions.
He charged that that decision was made as none of the ministers could face the UNHRC because of the government’s failure to fulfill any of the assurance given by the government.
He recalled that several Ministers including the then Minister of Human Rights Mahinda Samarasinghe assured to take several steps to ensure preservation of human rights, media freedom in 2009 but nothing had been fulfilled to date.
He said the assurance given by the government that the recommendations of Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation commission (LLRC) had also not been fulfilled to this date.
“How any of the ministers could face the UN in such a situation,” he asked.
The UNP MP said the passing of the UNHRC resolution would be obvious in such a situation. He said it is likely that UNHRC would decide to send in rapporteurs to Sri Lanka look into the human rights situation, independence of the Judiciary and media freedom.
He said it was likely that different rapporteurs would be sent to look into each of these components.
Mr. Kirilla also charged that the government had lost the support of UN and the European Union while the Commonwealth Union is on the fence.
“Commonwealth is on the fence especially with regard to allowing Sri Lanka to host the Commonwealth Summit (CHOGM) this year,” he said.
“This is the kind of humiliation which the present regime had brought to this country,” he said.
