Notice on Nettikumara over gambling den

The Colombo Fort Magistrate today issued notice on Vajira Janaki Nettikumara to appear in Courts on January 13 on charges of having permitted the operation of an up-market gambling centre in a building owned by her.

The building is located at Union Place in Colombo 2. 

The Slave Island police charged her of having permitted a gambling centre to operate in the building she owned.
      
They informed Magistrate Thilina Gamage that a police unit had raided this gambling den on more than five occasions since 2005 and legal action was taken against those who operated it and against those who took part in its activities.

The Slave Island police which is conducting investigations into the incident informed Court that the building owner had leased it out on an agreement that the gambling centre manager at a daily charge of Rs.2,500.

They said the Inland Revenue Department had informed them that the gambling centre did not possess a valid license to run a Casino club. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
