Fishermen talks on March 25; no response from TN

The new date for the talks between Indian and Lanka Fishermen had been fixed to March 25 on a directive of Fisheries Minister, Fisheries Department Director General Nimal Hettiarachchi said.

The talks were to be held today, March13 but had been postponed.

“We have decided on fisheries talks between Sri Lankan and Tamil Nadu fishermen on March 25 and we have informed them about the date, but still we didn’t get any response regarding that date,” he said.

The talks were scheduled to be held this afternoon at SEDEC, Colombo before it was postponed. No special reason was mentioned on postponing the talks.

“We had made all arrangements for the accommodation and traveling facilities for the representatives at the airport and sent a delegation to receive them at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). But they informed us at the last moment that they couldn’t come,” Mr. Hettiarachchi said.

Meanwhile the Indian express website reported that the Sri Lankan Government had suggested March 25 as the alternative date.

According to other sources, Tamil Nadu had suggested March 18. The two sides are expected to agree on March 25.

Sri Lanka received the list of the Indians who will participate at the talks -- 18 fishermen and three officials from Tamil Nadu; six fishermen and two officials from Puducherry, the web site reported. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
