Fire at Mattegoda army camp
An explosion followed by a fire that broke out at the ammunition dump of the Army Engineers Regiment Camp in Mattegoda this morning, is suspected to have been triggered by lightning.The Army said it appeared to be an accidental fire but the camp did not handle much ammunition and explosives.
The incident took place around 7.25 am in the ammunition dump maintained by the Army Field Engineers.
However the Army said there were no reports of any injuries or damage to property.
Army Commander Daya Ratnayake in the aftermath of the explosion instructed the Military Police to conduct an investigation while appointing a Court of Inquiry headed by the Colonel Commandant of the Engineers Regiment. (Supun Dias)
