Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera stated that it is compulsory for any expert or individual conducting researches on natural disaster situation including earthquakes and Tsunamis, to consult the Ministry as well as relevant national authorities prior to making their results or conclusions public.

Speaking at a media briefing today Minister Amaraweera pointing out the recent Tsunami panic that arose following a statement made by a professional regarding a possible series of earthquakes, said that as a result of failing to consult the national authorities prior publicizing certain research findings, an unnecessary panic was created among the public.

“The Disaster Management Ministry as well as the national authorities including the Meteorological Department, National Building Research Organization and the Disaster Management Center is well equipped to warn the public of possible natural disasters. Therefore we urge the public to trust the national authorities and refrain from spreading rumours which leads to unnecessary trouble,” the Minister added. (Lakna Paranamanna)
