Lankan arrested with Rs.7 Mn worth foreign currency
A Sri Lankan, who was attempting to smuggle out of the country 10 bundles of foreign currency worth Rs.7,717,634, was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) this morning.Customs media spokesman Leslie Gamini said the foreign currency, made up of 22,500 Euros, 15,000 pounds sterling and 1,000,000 Japanese Yen, was concealed inside the baggage of a 45-year-old resident of Kandy. The arrest was made when the Customs officers were alerted by his suspicious behavior while at the departure lounge awaiting a flight to Singapore.
Investigations are being carried out under the supervision of Airport Director Roshini Peiris, Deputy Customs Director Stanley Senaratne, Deputy Customs Superintendent M.K. Udaya Gamini and Assistant Customs Superintendent Nuwan Abeynayake. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
