Video: Customs foil attempt to bring in 100 kg. of heroin



In another massive haul, close on 100 kilograms of heroin was detected last night by Customs Revenue Task Force (RTF) officers. It had been brought down from Pakistan and is believed to have a street value of around Rs.1.2 billion, official sources said.

The heroin was still being weighed by RTF officers at the time of going to press,.

The detection was made last evening and weighing was begun at around 6.00pm yesterday.

The heroin was found inside a 40-foot container which was to be cleared on the pretext that it contained hardware items.

The smugglers had made four holes in the corners of these hardware items and hidden the heroin inside and covered it with grease.

The street value of one kilogram of heroin is between Rs.6.5 million and Rs.8.5 million.

On August 31st last year, the RTF under its former chief, Customs Director Mali Piyasena, detected 262 kilograms of heroin worth around Rs.2.5 billion.

This was the largest ever heroin detection in South Asia. (Supun Dias)
