Video: CHOGM to affect commercial flights

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka today said it would try to minimise the disruption to the scheduled commercial flights at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) when there would be VVIP flight arrivals during the CHOGM.

“Priority will be given to the VVIP flight arrivals at the BIA during the summit. In such cases, scheduled commercial flights may be affected but we will try to minimise the disruption to commercial flights,” CAA Director General H.M.C. Nimalasiri said.

He also said they were prepared to handle the possible rush at BIA during the summit as most of the state heads would arrive few hours prior to the summit and would depart soon after the summit was concluded.

Mr. Nimalasiri said 25 to 35 aircraft may arrive in the country during the summit in addition to the scheduled commercial flights.

“Some state heads may come in their own aircraft, escorted by security aircraft and some may arrive in commercial aircraft,” he said.

He said the CAA has informed all the heads of state as to how the flights approval would be sorted at the BIA.

“We are expecting them to respond but the security requests will mostly come at the last moment. However we are pretty sure we can handle them confidently without any hassle,” he said.

He said the CAA was making arrangements closely working with the external Ministry and the CHOGM Secretariat in this regard.

The Airport Aviation Limited, Sri Lanka Air Force and SriLankan Airlines were working together with the CAA to make this a success, he added. (Chaturanga Pradeep and Indika Sri Aravinda)
