The Prisons Department has taken steps to set up eight CCTV cameras in the premises of Welikada prison.
The CCTV cameras are to be fixed in the prison to fight the corruption and to monitor the actions of the officers as well as the inmates.
The Welikada prison has 4,000 inmates and is considered a hub of crime -- including drug deals and extortion. The Prisons Department said this was the first time CCTV cameras were used in prisons.
“Since Welikada has the largest number of inmates it is difficult to monitor all their activities. Therefore, installing such cameras will help the department to tackle these inside prison crimes,” a prisons official said.
The department has plans to install CCTV cameras in the Galle, Anuradhapura and Bogambara prisons.
However, the plans for the setting up of CCTV cameras in other prisons would be delayed due to financial straits, a spokesman of the Prisons Department said. (SD)
