CBK seeks meeting with MR on religious harmony

Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga has sought an appointment with President Mahinda Rajapaksa today in her capacity as the South Asia Policy and Research Institute (SAPRI) representative, to submit the organization’s recommendations for religious harmony, sources close to her said.

This is part of her plan to meet with the leaders of key political parties.  Earlier SAPRI   organized a few meetings as part of its plans to launch a set of prospects to uphold harmony among the religions in Sri Lanka. She also invited the Mahanayakes of the three chapters to send their nominees for the meeting of the forum to promote inter faith harmony conducted in January.

Likewise, the hierarchies of the Christian, Hindu and Islamic religions were also requested to send their representatives to this meeting conducted on January 28.

SAPRI commissioned a group of eminent persons to draft a set of ‘Recommendations’ to promote religious harmony in Sri Lanka. SAPRI’s Forum for Inter-Faith Dialogue has been meeting intermittently over the past six months to formulate these recommendations.

The group comprises clergymen, lawyers, university dons and leaders of civil society.

However, the former President will meet opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at 10 am today to hand over the report containing these recommendations.

Sources said Ms. Kumaratunga would meet Mr. Wickremesinghe along with a few other members of the UNP Leadership Council. (Kelum Bandara)
