Bus fares to go up next week

Private Bus Owners Association President Gamunu Wijeratne said the Association had decided on a bus fare hike after the authorities had rejected a fuel subsidy.

He told the Daily Mirror that the decision was taken after today’s discussion with officials of the National Transport Commission (NTC), the Transport Ministry and the Finance Ministry.

He said the minimum bus fare would not be increased while the percentage of the increase was still being worked out. The bus fare hike would be effective from next week.

Private Bus Owners Association had earlier demanded a fuel subsidy instead of a bus fare hike.

However private transport service Ministry Secretary Victor Samaraweera said, the Ministry would consider the demands made by the Private Bus Owners Association and would come to a final decision after presenting the proposals to the Cabinet. The decision whether to grant fuel subsidy or increase bus fares will be taken after the cabinet approval. (Ajith Siriwardana)
